The Smashing Pumpkins are an American alternative rock band that formed in Chicago in 1988. While the group has gone through several lineup changes, The Smashing Pumpkins consisted of Billy Corgan (vocals/guitar), James Iha (guitar/vocals), D’arcy Wretzky (bass/vocals), and Jimmy Chamberlin (drums/percussion) for most of the band’s recording career.

Disavowing the punk rock roots shared by many of their alt-rock contemporaries, the Pumpkins have a diverse, densely layered, and guitar-heavy sound, containing elements of gothic rock, heavy metal, dream pop, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, shoegazer-style production and, in later recordings, electronica. Frontman Billy Corgan is the group’s primary songwriter—his grand musical ambitions and cathartic lyrics have shaped the band’s albums and songs, which have been described as “anguished, bruised reports from Billy Corgan’s nightmare-land”.

The Smashing Pumpkins broke into the musical mainstream with their second album, 1993’s Siamese Dream. The group built their audience with extensive touring and their follow-up, 1995’s double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, debuted at number one on the Billboard charts. With approximately 18.25 million albums sold in the United States alone,[4] The Smashing Pumpkins were one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands of the 1990s.[5] However, internal fighting, drug use, and diminishing sales hampered the band and led to a 2000 break-up. In April 2006, the band officially announced that it was reuniting and recording a new album. Returning members Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin were joined by new additions Jeff Schroeder (guitar/vocals), Ginger Reyes (bass/vocals), and Lisa Harriton (keyboard/vocals) in 2007 to tour in support of their new release, Zeitgeist.

Cowboy Junkies formed in Toronto in 1985. The band’s name was chosen randomly as they approached their first gig.

The Trinity Session is perhaps their best known album, recorded live on a single microphone at the Church of the Holy Trinity in downtown Toronto by producer Peter J. Moore. This album also included a cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Sweet Jane” based on the 1969 Live (or was it Lou Reed’s 1964) album version rather than the studio version from Loaded.

Probably one of the most insane videoclips ever, very freaky and disturbing dont you just love it? The accompanying video was directed by acclaimed director Chris Cunningham and filmed on the same council estate where Stanley Kubrick shot many scenes in A Clockwork Orange. It opens with an old lady walking her dog. She comes across an old television, on which her dog urinates. This awakens a monster in the television, who commands children (who all bear the face of Richard D. James) to do his bidding, such as trashing an alley and chasing a man into his car. At one point, the monster (played by Al Stokes) comes out of the television and screams in the old lady’s face. After this, he gathers the children around him in a manner reminiscent of Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Released: October 6, 1997
Recorded: 1996-1997
Genre: Techno, Drill ‘n bass, acid techno
Producer: Richard D. James

Enron, Google and the evolutionary psychology of corporate environments

By Michael Shermer

  • People compete against one another to come out on top—and they also collaborate with others to succeed. This yin and yang of our natures expresses itself in the working world today just as it did in our ancestors as they struggled to survive and thrive.
  • Studies of how corporations work give us insights into the evolutionary underpinnings of our morality, including concepts such as reciprocity, altruism and fairness.
  • Examining the history of two companies, Enron and Google, illuminates the interplay of personal relationships and social institutions in the modern world.

In the 1987 film Wall Street, Michael Douglas’s character, the high-rolling corporate raider Gordon Gekko, explains why America has lost its standing atop the industrial world: “The new law of evolution in corporate America seems to be survival of the unfittest. Well, in my book you either do it right or you get eliminated.” He elaborates:

Statements made in the media can surreptitiously plant distortions in the minds of millions. Learning to recognize two commonly used fallacies can help you separate fact from fiction

By Yvonne Raley and Robert Talisse.

In 2003 nearly half of all Americans falsely assumed that the U.S. government had found solid evidence for a link between Iraq and al Qaeda. What is more, almost a quarter of us believed that investigators had all but confirmed the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, according to a 2003 report by the University of Maryland’s Program on International Policy Attitudes and Knowledge Networks, a polling and market research firm. How did the true situation in Iraq become so grossly distorted in American minds?

Many people have attributed such misconceptions to a politically motivated disinformation campaign to engender support for the armed struggle in Iraq. We do not think the deceptions were premeditated, however. Instead they are most likely the result of common types of reasoning errors, which appear frequently in discussions in the news media and which can easily fool an unsuspecting public.
